Pregnancy Body Massage
Pregnancy can be a magical time for a mum-to-be, whether it's your first ... or fifth!
However, with all the changes happening to your body at this time as your baby develops, it can put pressure on your joints, ligaments and organs, leaving you feeling stressed and in pain and discomfort.
A body massage at this time can be of tremendous benefit - both emotionally and physiologically - not only for you, but for your unborn baby also.
As the massage aims to alleviate aches and pains physically, it can also help reduce any stress and anxiety you may be feeling prior to your baby's arrival.
How Can It Help?
As your body undergoes so many changes, a regular massage can make you more aware of your own body and what you need to do to take care of yourself and your unborn baby at this stage. If you have the ability to relax, this may lead to a shorter and easier birth, with less pain and a lower rate of post-natal complications.
Additional benefits of receiving a body massage whilst pregnant are:
- Improved circulation: helping nutrients and fluids reach your organs as well as the placenta
- Lymphatic drainage: aiding the elimination of toxins and reduction of oedema
- Releasing muscular tension/compression of nerves caused by muscular tension and/or oedema
- Improved respiratory intake by massaging the intercostal and pectoral muscles
- Improved bowel movement - aiding relief from a sluggish bowel
- Relaxation and aiding more peaceful sleep
- Release of stress (physical and/or emotional) and anxiety
- Aims to lower high blood pressure
- Encourages release of oxytocin (a pain-reducing hormone)
What to Expect During a Pregnancy Massage Session?
As per a standard Therapeutic Body Massage, sessions are tailored to suit your needs. A massage can be of 30, 60 or 90 minutes' duration - depending on your preference (and ability to lay on the massage couch if opting for a 90 minute full body massage).
Treatments take place on a massage couch and, for your ease in the stages of pregnancy, the massage is performed with you in a side-lying position for a majority of the massage. A maternity support pillow allows you to lay comfortably on your side and towels are carefully placed to ensure your modesty and keep you warm and comfortable throughout.
The massage is performed using a nourishing oil. The oil enables me to provide a free-flowing massage and relax areas of tension.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage - What Is It?
Your lymphatic system is an important part of your immune system. It keeps fluids in your body balanced and protects you against infections.
Your lymphatic system includes organs, vessels, and tissues which move or drain a water-like fluid called lymph from other parts of your body into your bloodstream. It has no ‘pump’ like the heart moving blood around the body and relies on movement and contraction of your muscles to keep it flowing.
If your lymphatic system isn’t working efficiently, you may experience: swelling and retention of fluid in the body and/or a feeling of congestion; a feeling of heaviness and/or aching; difficulty with movement; tightness and/or hardness of the skin; frequent skin infections.
Who Can It Help?
Lymphatic drainage massage has become a popular form of massage due to its gentle application and potential health benefits.
Performed as a full body massage, or tailored for specific areas (eg. facial lymphatic massage), lymphatic drainage massage may support you with the following:
- Inflammation in the body;
- Congestion (eg. bowels, sinuses, etc);
- Post-surgery recovery or supporting the body to heal from an injury;
- Improve circulation;
- Auto-immune conditions;
- Fibromyalgia;
- Chronic venous insufficiency;
- Lymphoedema;
- Lipoedema;
- General relaxation
What to Expect During a Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
A Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialist massage using light-touch techniques (as many of the lymphatic vessels are located just under the skin. The massage includes work on the neck, arms, legs, back, abdomen and face.
Treatments take place on a massage couch, without the use of oil. Towels are carefully placed to ensure your modesty and keep you warm and comfortable throughout the treatment.
Detox Massage - What Is It?
In this day and age, pollutants are an every-day occurrence: traffic fumes, food additives, household products. And that's not even taking into account our internal toxins: metabolic waste (eg. digestion, lactic acid), emotional toxins caused by stress, anxiety and negative emotions. Our body constantly repairs itself and reproduces new cells, however if the levels of free radicals within our body becomes too great, our ability to repair and feel healthy becomes compromised.
A Detox Massage can help your mind and your body as it enhances your body's cleansing process. With your internal systems able to process more efficiently, a detox massage may improve circulation, reduce inflammation, reduce stress (of both body and mind), support and improve your immune system and promote a more efficient elimination of toxins from the digestive and lymphatic systems.
Who Can It Help?
A Detox Massage may be beneficial to those who are experiencing any of the following:
- Skin disorders: acne, eczema, psoriasis, rashes
- Water retention
- Muscle aches and pains
- Digestive issues
- Headaches & migraines
- Fatigue: CFS, ME, tiredness, exhaustion
- Sinus congestion
- Autoimmune conditions: fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis
